                                                               ANGUILLA The island of Anguilla was colonized by the English in 1650. It was only colonized once by the British. The first people to settle on the island were the Arawak's around 2000 B.C. and when the British first came and colonized the island they had vanished. Anguilla gained it's independence in 1980 when it officially separated from Saint Kitts. During the 19th century the British associated Anguilla and Saint Kitts and Nevis with each other which gave Saint Kitts governmental control over Anguilla which they did not like.
